Kupchak to Have Knee Surgery Today
Mitch Kupchak, the Lakers’ reserve forward-center, will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery today on his left knee and probably will be out for at least a week.
Kupchak, averaging 5.8 points and 3.4 rebounds this season, had sprained his knee two weeks ago, then re-injured it Monday night in the Lakers’ 127-117 victory over Golden State.
In 1981-82, Kupchak suffered career-threatening injuries to his left knee. He tore a ligament and cartilage and also broke a bone. But Kupchak returned to play a significant role in the Lakers’ championship series victory over Boston last season.
Dr. Stephen Lombardo, who will perform the arthroscopy on Kupchak, said that no major surgery is anticipated but that a minor repair could be made during the arthroscopic procedure.
The Lakers will wait until they know the result of the surgery before deciding whether to sign another player to a 10-day contract.
