Fernald School Group to Seek Reprieve

Friends of Fernald will request a meeting with UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young to ask him to close the Fernald School for students with learning disabilities on June 30.
About 75 parents, students and teachers attended a meeting of the support group on Sunday to discuss ways to save the school, said parent spokesman Michael Cornell. Another meeting is scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday at the school, he said.
UCLA officials said the university decided to close Fernald because similar schools are available elsewhere, and the research funds could be diverted to the study of learning disabilities.
But parents, teachers and students contend that Fernald provides an unusual opportunity for young people with learning problems to attend school in a setting where new educational theories are being developed and tested.
