San Diego Roundup : Fouts Plans Bowling Meet in El Cajon

The Dan Fouts Celebrity Bowling Tournament to benefit the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Valley Bowl in El Cajon.

More than 80 celebrities are scheduled to participate in the tournament including Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Rolf Benirschke and most of the Chargers, actor and former Ram Fred Dryer, Raider Mike Haynes and actor Christopher Atkins.

Last year, the tournament raised $25,000 toward building a home for severely abused children on the foundation’s ranch outside Escondido. The foundation plans to use the money from this year’s tournament to build another house on the ranch.

The public can bowl in the tournament and go to the awards buffet afterward by paying the $150 tax-deductible entry fee. For more information call, 562-3500.

Some of the best distance runners in the world have entered the Buick 10K set for March 23.

Among those entered are Steve Scott, who won the Heart of San Diego 10K in December, Suleiman Nyambui of Kenya, Coronado’s Thom Hunt, Frank Shorter and defending champion Rich Brownsberger, who finished in 28:55 last year.

The women’s field includes Wendy Sly and Lynn Williams, the 1984 Olympic silver and bronze medalists in the 3,000 meters. Also entered are U.S. Olympian Ruth Wysocki and Mary Knisely, the 1985 World Cup champion in the 10,000.

The race begins on G Street, winds through Balboa Park and finishes on Broadway near Horton Plaza. There will be a post-race party in front of Horton Plaza.

Fred Hall’s Western Fishing Tackle and Boat Show will be March 19-23 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. On display will be a range of boats from dinghies to large sailboats, as well as various fishing tackle.

Lure designer and fisherman Cotton Cordell will be at the show to answer questions.

Admission is $5 for adults. Children under 12 are free with parents. The show opens at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
