Dornan’s ‘Little Jew’ Remark

Share

Let’s see if I’ve got this straight.

Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove), speaking in the House of Representatives, calls a Soviet commentator a “disloyal, betraying little Jew.”

He absolves himself of blatant anti-Semitism by:

--Apologizing to several rabbis of Orange County as though they may be the only ones who have been offended by the remark.

--Inducing a Los Angeles rabbi to make the Nixonion declaration, “Bob Dornan is not an anti-Semite.”

--Explaining that he had been in a hurry and was permitted only one minute to tell, presumably, what was in his heart.

--Arranging to amend the Congressional Record to read “betraying little turncoat,” expunging forever the fact of what he did say.

The Times dismisses the incident by tucking the original story on Page 5 (Feb. 22) and burying the following day’s apology story on Page 13.

I’m scared. So should we all be.
