Clippers Are Just What the Spurs Need : San Antonio Ends Skid, 142-126; Nixon Has 6 Three-Pointers

Alvin Robertson scored 30 points and pulled down 11 rebounds Friday night, and the San Antonio Spurs snapped a seven-game National Basketball Assn. losing streak with a 142-126 victory over the Clippers.

Wes Matthews added 22 points and 16 assists, and Mike Mitchell scored 22 points for the Spurs, who played without starting center Artis Gilmore, out with a pulled hamstring.

Norm Nixon led the Clippers with 33 points, including a team-record six three-point baskets. Cedric Maxwell and Marques Johnson added 20 points each for the Clippers, who lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

San Antonio scored the first eight points and raced to a 45-27 lead by the end of the first quarter as Johnson had 13 points and Robertson and Matthews added 10 each. The Spurs connected on 71.4% of their shots, 20 of 28, in the quarter.

Reserve guard Jeff Lamp scored nine points in the second period as the Spurs opened a 76-53 halftime lead.

San Antonio led by as many as 35 points late in the third quarter.

The Clippers scored six three-point baskets in the final period, five by Nixon, who had 17 points in the quarter.

The Clippers, two games into a stretch of seven games in 10 days, will play Denver at the Sports Arena Sunday, then meet the Lakers at the Forum Tuesday night and Seattle at the Sports Arena Wednesday night.

The Clippers trail Sacramento by 5 1/2 games and Phoenix by 1 1/2 in the chase for the eighth berth in the Western Conference playoffs.
