Catcher Ernie Lombardi and second baseman Bobby Doerr were elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame today by the Veterans Committee.

Lombardi and Doerr will be inducted in August along with Willie McCovey, elected in January by the Baseball Writers’ Assn. of America. Lombardi, who died in 1977 at the age of 69, had a career batting average of .303 in 17 seasons with Brooklyn, Cincinnati, the Boston Braves and the New York Giants. Doerr, who will be 68 next month, played his entire career with the Boston Red Sox between 1937 and 1951, and shares the American League record for most years leading the league in double plays, five.
