Local News in Brief : Gas Leak in High-Pressure Line Routs 284 Tarzana Residents
- Share via
A leak in a 40-inch, high-pressure natural gas line Monday night forced the evacuation of at least 284 residents in four apartment buildings and six houses on the Encino-Tarzana border, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.
The residents were evacuated from the area of Burbank Boulevard and Lindley Avenue by fire officials, who said they were notifying the Red Cross to arrange for shelter. A spokesman for Southern California Edison Co. described a 40-inch pipe as a “major transmission line” that feeds gas to smaller lines for distribution.
Authorities said 21 engine companies responded just after 9 p.m., and 60 to 70 police officers had cordoned off the area. Authorities set up a command post at White Oak Avenue and Burbank Boulevard and were attempting to determine the severity of the leak. The smell of gas was noticeable at least four blocks from the leak.
Los Angeles Fire Chief Donald Manning was on the scene and an evacuation center had been set up at Reseda High School.
