Bill to Ease Gun Sales Advances

WASHINGTON —
The House Judiciary Committee today unanimously approved and sent to the floor a controversial measure to permit interstate sales of rifles and shotguns, but left intact a ban on cross-state handgun sales.
The bill also would require licensed gun dealers to notify law enforcement authorities of a handgun purchase to permit a check to make sure the purchaser does not have a criminal conviction. The bill, however, includes no waiting period for handgun purchases.
