Durazo Granted Stay to Appeal Extradition
Former Mexico City Police Chief Arturo Durazo on Monday was given a three-day stay to fight an extradition order sending him to Mexico to stand trial on illegal weapons and extortion charges.
U.S. District Judge Matt Byrne Jr. in Los Angeles gave Durazo’s attorneys until Thursday to file an appeal with the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, after the judge ordered Durazo’s extradition on Feb. 28.
Mexican authorities allege that as Mexico City’s chief law enforcement officer between 1976 and 1982, Durazo, 68, became a wealthy man through extortion and bribes of men under his command in licensing bureaus and auxiliary police units.
