Spanish tenor Placido Domingo has arrived in Mexico to distribute about $750,000 he has earned in recent concerts to benefit victims of the earthquakes that struck Mexico City last September, a newspaper said.

Domingo, who lost four family members when a 12-story apartment building collapsed in the Sept. 19 earthquake, pledged to continue his efforts to help the tens of thousands of Mexican homeless, El Financiero newspaper reported Monday.

The opera singer, who lived in Mexico City as an adolescent, said he preferred to distribute the funds directly to families who lost their homes at the Tlatelolco apartment complex instead of turning over the proceeds to the government’s National Earthquake Victims fund. “I don’t want to think badly, and I have no doubts about anyone,” Domingo said, adding that he preferred to give the money directly “as the aid has to be real and arrive quickly.”
