Rep. Joseph P. Addabbo (D-N.Y.), chairman of the powerful House Appropriations defense subcommittee, was in a coma and said to be near death after a six-year bout with cancer. His office issued a terse statement saying the 60-year-old congressman “has slipped into a coma and is not expected to survive.” It said he had suffered from bladder cancer for six years, a fact the jovial congressman apparently kept secret from most of his associates despite a four-month hospitalization last fall.
