A legislator who had trouble competing with names like Kennedy and Roosevelt in the fight for the Democratic nomination for the House seat of retiring Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr. dropped out of the race Wednesday.

State Rep. Thomas Vallely had promoted himself as “the other guy” in the race, which includes Joseph P. Kennedy III, son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and James Roosevelt Jr., grandson of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
