Dodger Notebook : Hershiser and Reuss Stop Reds, 6-1; Duncan Stays Hot

Turning in four double plays in the first four innings, the Dodgers won their fourth straight exhibition game Friday, shutting down the Cincinnati Reds before 5,171 at Holman Stadium, 6-1.

Orel Hershiser was the beneficiary of the Dodger defense and became the first Dodger pitcher to go five innings this spring, allowing seven hits and a run. Jerry Reuss worked the last four innings, giving up four hits and walking two, but he did not allow a run.

Mariano Duncan had three hits, including his fourth triple in seven games, scored twice and had two RBIs for the Dodgers, who had 11 hits against four Cincinnati pitchers, including loser Bill Gullickson.

The Reds spared a number of players, including Dave Parker, the three-hour bus ride from Tampa. Player-manager Pete Rose made the trip but did not play.

Greg Brock, whose .188 average going into the game typified his usual slow start in spring, hit his first home run of 1986, a two-run shot off Gullickson in the third.

Pedro Guerrero made a brief appearance. Guerrero, who only moments before had been in the Dodger clubhouse, eating a hamburger, pinch-hit for Ken Landreaux in the seventh. Guerrero walked, then was removed from the game for a pinch-runner.

Landreaux, who has complained of pain in his right side, had X-rays taken of his ribs after playing in Thursday’s game against Montreal. The X-rays were negative. Landreaux is hitting .167 (2 for 12) this spring, but Jose Gonzalez, the 21-year-old rookie given an outside chance of taking Landreaux’s job, is hitting .091 (1 for 11) so far.

Enos Cabell, who sprained the middle finger on his left hand diving into third base Tuesday at Tampa, did not play Friday.

Bob Welch is scheduled to start today against the Houston Astros at Kissimmee, Fla.
