Condemnation proceedings against owners of 12 pieces of property in the 34th Street Canyon in Golden Hill were begun Monday by the San Diego City Council.
City staff members said the proceedings were necessary because eight owners had rejected city overtures to buy part of the land for open space, and five other pieces of property were in escrow with “title problems.”
Council members temporarily dropped one parcel from the condemnation drive after the owner complained Monday. In all, the city is trying to acquire 50 canyon parcels totaling 19 acres for open space. Parcels to be condemned cover about seven acres and are estimated to be worth more than $600,000. Money was set aside for the purchase in 1985.
