Two Val Verde men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder late Sunday in connection with the shooting of two men in Newhall, authorities said.

Daniel Delgado, 21, and Juan Cardenas, 19, were held without bail at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Substation after their arrest at about 11 p.m. Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesmen said.

Jose Gomez, 20, and Miguel Garcia Rivera, 22, were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital after the shooting, Deputy Mike Ford said. Gomez, who was shot in the thigh, was treated and released. Rivera, who was shot in the right shoulder, was in fair condition on Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The two said they were standing in front of an Alta-Dena Dairy at San Fernando Road and 2nd Street at about 7:25 p.m. when at least six men carrying sticks and knives got out of a blue pickup truck and began chasing them, the sheriff’s spokesmen said. The group fled after one suspect shot Gomez and Rivera with a shotgun, Deputy Mike Ford said.

Investigators believe that the two victims just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when the group showed up looking for trouble, Sgt. James Rupsa said.
