NHL Roundup : Goulet Nets Four as Nordiques Beat Canadiens, 8-6

Quebec’s Michel Goulet collected four goals and two assists Monday night as the Nordiques, scoring four times in the final period, beat the Canadiens, 8-6, at Montreal, extending their Adams Division lead to three points over the Canadiens.

Goulet reached the 50-goal plateau for the fourth straight season, and the win improved Quebec’s record against Montreal to 6-2 this season.

The crowd of 18,092 at the Forum cheered Goulet and booed Montreal’s rookie goalie Patrick Roy when he was pulled from the game after Alain Cote scored the first of his two consecutive goals to give the Nordiques a 7-4 lead.

Montreal scored the first three goals of the game and still had a 3-2 lead late in the first period, but Goulet--who has 52 goals--scored four of Quebec’s goals in succession to give the Nordiques a 6-4 lead early in the final period.

Canadien rookie Stephane Richer picked up his first career hat trick with 12 seconds left in the game. Dale Hunter had four assists for Quebec.

Washington 5, Pittsburgh 3--Dave Christian ended an 11-game scoring drought with a pair of goals as the Capitals climbed to within one point of Patrick Division-leading Philadelphia by defeating the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

The victory was Washington’s 10th in the past 11 games and left Pittsburgh, 0-6-1 in the past seven games, one point behind the New York Rangers in the race for the final playoff berth in the division.

Pittsburgh center Mario Lemieux was held without a point, ending his team-record consecutive scoring streak at 28 games. The streak was the second-longest in the league this season and fourth-longest in NHL history.

Minnesota 6, St. Louis 5--Dino Ciccarelli completed a hat trick on a power play with 25 seconds left in overtime to lift the North Stars to a victory over the Blues at Minneapolis.

The victory gave the North Stars a one-point lead over the Blues for second place in the Norris Division. Division-leading Chicago has 78 points. Minnesota is next with 75, and St. Louis has 74.

Minnesota goalie Don Beaupre won his 13th straight game.
