Construction has begun on a $17-million expansion of Huntington Center that will include an 82,000-square-foot Mervyn’s department store, 11 fast-food restaurants and 26 other shops in a new, 55,000-square-foot wing of Huntington Beach shopping center.

The MacDonald Group Ltd., Century City-based owners of the shopping center, said a fiberglass and Teflon roof will be built over the restaurant gallery, which will link the two-level Mervyn’s store with the rest of the mall. Completion of the project is expected by October.

The Huntington Beach mall, which opened in 1965, contains 52 stores, including J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward and the Broadway.
