Downey : Superintendent Chosen

Share

Opting for a choice close to home, the Downey Unified School District board of trustees selected Edward A. Sussman, the district’s former director of secondary instruction, as the new superintendent Monday.

The appointment, which went into effect Tuesday, caps a two-month search for a superintendent that eventually attracted more than 100 applicants. Manuel Gallegos, who was superintendent since 1971, retired Feb. 28 but will act as a consultant until August to help orient the Sussman on policies and procedures of the district.

“I’m really happy about” the appointment, Sussman said. “I hope to continue the excellence that has been part of the district for years.”

Sussman, 44, was principal of South Middle School from 1981 to 1983. He came to the district in 1981 from the Alhambra Unified School District. Sussman’s contract will run through June 30, 1988.
