“Prostitution and politics have more in common than one might suppose,” a former civilian traffic cop turned $200-a-night call girl said, announcing her candidacy for lieutenant governor. Norma Jean Almodovar, the California Libertarian Party candidate, worked as a civilian member of the Los Angeles Police Department for 10 years before turning to prostitution in 1982. She was convicted of pandering in 1984 for attempting to convince another woman traffic officer to become a prostitute. “It can even be said that since I have been prohibited from engaging in an honest profession, I am seeking to engage in a legal profession,” said Almodovar, 34. Her campaign, she added, will focus on so-called victimless crimes such as prostitution, gambling, private drug use and pornography.
