As a show of community support for the beleaguered space shuttle program, officials in Lancaster have authorized a name change for the street which runs from the shuttle production facility to Edwards Air Force Base. A spokesman for the city of Lancaster said 10th Street East will officially become Challenger Way-10th Street East at a public ceremony in that city on April 4. After leaving Rockwell Industries’ Plant 41 in Palmdale, new space shuttles have been pulled along a 10-mile stretch of the street before being loaded piggyback onto a Boeing 747 jet at Edwards in Lancaster and flown to Florida for launching. Lancaster Public Information Officer Keith Till said the street signs will feature a three-color design of Challenger flying across a setting sun.
