U.S. Buys Marcos’ ‘Necessities’
The U.S. Treasury has picked up the $39,000 tab--at least temporarily--for “necessities” ousted Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos and his family charged at military post exchanges in Guam and Hawaii, a congressman said today.
The funds came out of a Navy operations and maintenance account, according to Rep. Dan Daniel (D-Va.), chairman of the House Armed Services readiness subcommittee, which oversees operations of the PXs at U.S. military bases. Daniel said he was concerned the United States might get stuck with the bill. He said that it is unclear who authorized the payment and that he intends to investigate.
