About 2,000 Salvadorans chanting slogans for dialogue with leftist rebels and an end to civil war marched through central San Salvador on Monday to mark the sixth anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero.

Romero, one of the most outspoken advocates of talks between the Salvadoran government and leftist insurgents, was gunned down on March 24, 1980, while conducting Mass at a small chapel in the capital.

Marchers holding palm fronds, flowers and photos of Romero walked in three long columns along a two-mile route through the capital.
