LISBON — A U.S.-backed Angolan rebel organization claimed today that it “bombed and dynamited” installations in Angola of Cabinda Gulf, a subsidiary of Chevron Corp.
A spokesman for the rebel group UNITA, headed by Jonas Savimbi, said in Lisbon that rebels sabotaged all oil storage tanks at the company’s Malongo depot. Chevron employees in Angola said there was no attack. Last month in Washington, Savimbi threatened to order such an attack unless U.S. firms stopped “lobbying” against his effort to win U.S. aid.
