The president of a drilling firm was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of an employee in an elevator shaft hole at a downtown Los Angeles construction site last October, a spokesman for the district attorney said. Michael Maggio, 29, of Maggio Drilling Inc. of West Covina, supervising work which led to the death of employee Kevin Bauman, allegedly failed to monitor the quality of the air in the hole, to shore up the excavation’s sides and to lower Bauman in a safety harness, Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner said. “The employer took a chance that he could save time and money by cutting corners and lost,” Reiner said in a prepared statement. Neither Maggio nor his attorney could be reached for comment.
