27 Thoroughbreds Killed in Fire

Twenty-seven race horses worth millions of dollars were killed when fire swept through a barn at Festoon Farms in Camden, S.C. An assistant trainer who lived in the barn escaped and saved 13 of the thoroughbreds.

All that remained of the barn were ashes, charred metal, a U-shaped concrete-brick wall and the horses’ remains. Workers used a backhoe to dig a grave about 200 yards away. The fire was believed to be caused by faulty wiring.
