College Baseball Roundup : Leonard’s 2-Run Homer Rallies Santa Barbara Past UCI, 6-4

Mark Leonard hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning Saturday to help UC Santa Barbara to a 6-4 win over UC Irvine in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game played on Anteater Field.

Santa Barbara (2-1 in conference, 20-10 overall) led all the way, but UCI (1-2, 11-11-2) cut the lead to 4-3 with a run in the fifth. After Leonard’s home run, the Anteaters scored a run in the ninth.

Bruce Egloff (2-0) pitched the first five innings for Santa Barbara. Doug Linton (2-4), making his first start this season for UCI, went the distance. He gave up 11 hits.

On Tuesday, UCI travels to San Diego for two games. The Anteaters will play at United States International University at 2:30 and at San Diego State at 7.

In other college action:

Cal State Fullerton 11, Cal State Long Beach 5--Titan Al Stankiewicz hit a two-run double in the first inning and a three-run homer in the sixth to lead Fullerton (2-0, 22-9) to a PCAA win at Long Beach. Stankiewicz’s home run capped a five-run sixth inning that gave the Titans control of game.

Titan catcher John Eccles had a two-run double and his replacement, Mike Ham, had a three-run double.

Winning pitcher Larry Casian (3-1) pitched seven innings and allowed four hits and four runs. This was Casian’s third consecutive win since breaking into the starting rotation March 15.

Fullerton, ranked 11th by Collegiate Baseball magazine, has won its last five games and 13 of its last 15.

Tony Felicione hit a seventh-inning grand slam for Long Beach (0-2, 8-15-1). Losing pitcher Terrence Clover went six innings and allowed eight runs and 10 hits.

The teams finish the series today at 1 p.m. at Long Beach.

Chapman 10-3, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 6-2--The Panthers evened their California Collegiate Athletic Assn. record at 3-3 with a sweep at Hart Park in Orange.

The Panthers (10-17) were led by Jim Areias, who went 4 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and four runs scored. Brian Flatten was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Chapman clinched the first game in the sixth inning on Ron Wolkoy’s two-run homer, which put the Panthers ahead, 8-3. Winning pitcher Rob Glisson (4-3) pitched a complete game.

In the second game, San Luis Obispo (2-6, 11-10) tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the seventh on John Horton’s RBI single. The Panthers came back in the bottom half of the inning to load the bases. Brent Ryhlick’s one-out single to center drove in Jeff Morrison with the winning run. Morrison was 3 for 3 and 5 for 8 in the two games.

In community college action:

Saddleback 14, Mira Costa 4--Second baseman Buck Bollinger led off the bottom of the first inning with a first-pitch home run Saturday, and the Gauchos went on to an easy nonleague win over the Spartans at Saddleback.

John Sinclair (4-3) pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs, striking out six and walking two to pick up the win for Saddleback (11-6).

The Gauchos’ 15-hit attack was paced by third baseman Steve Lipton (3 for 6 with three runs scored), first baseman John Seeburger (2 for 4, two runs scored and one RBI) and catcher Jeff Frei (2 for 2, a home run and four RBIs).

Mira Mesa’s starting pitcher, Joe Harrison, gave up three runs in the first inning for the loss. By design, the Spartans employed a different pitcher each inning.

Cypress 10, Oxnard 2--Chris Kocman went 4 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Jim Jackle hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lead the Chargers to the win over the Condors at Elks Field in Santa Maria.

David Wooley, who had a no-hitter before yielding a double in the sixth inning, pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit, to earn the win. Cypress improves to 19-6.
