Cardinal Pitcher Cox Injures Ankle and May Be Out 2 Months

Share

Danny Cox, whose 18 victories helped the St. Louis Cardinals into the 1985 World Series, could be sidelined for two months after suffering a bone chip in his right ankle Sunday on a fishing trip, a team spokesman said Monday.

“I jumped off a sea wall while I was going fishing and I didn’t land right,” Cox said. “I’ve done it a thousand times. It’s just a freak accident. I didn’t think it was hurt that bad.”

Cardinal doctors decided not to put Cox’s ankle in a cast immediately, but rather have the Cardinal right-hander begin therapy and stay on crutches until Wednesday, when they will determine if a cast is needed. If that happens, Cox could be out of action for two months.

Cox had an 18-9 record last year with 10 complete games and 4 shutouts. He also won one game in the National League playoff series and started two World Series games against the Kansas City Royals, but did not get a decision in either.
