$150 Million for Interim Superfund Use Is Approved
President Reagan has signed a bill providing interim funds for the Superfund waste dump cleanup program, the White House said Tuesday.
The bill gives the agency $150 million to handle cleanup work until May 31 while Congress debates permanent financing. The special taxes that help finance cleanups expired last Sept. 30, and since then Superfund has been running on leftover funds.
EPA Administrator Lee M. Thomas said: “With the 60-day funding, we can move at full speed to restart many projects delayed last fall, to begin new projects and to keep the momentum going at projects where work is now under way.”
Thomas said the agency expects work to proceed at about 97 sites.
