Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) was the target of a letter bomb that was intercepted by postal officials about 10 days ago and found to be inoperative, the senator’s office confirmed. The package was sent by a former Kansas prison inmate, Dole disclosed Tuesday at a Chamber of Commerce meeting in Davenport, Iowa. Packages addressed to congressional offices have been routinely X-rayed by the Capitol post office since an explosion outside the Senate chamber in 1983. Dole said he had no indication of a motive for the bomb.
