SAN FRANCISCO — Tourist trade in this City by the Bay bounced back in 1985 after three consecutive years of decline, according to a study by leading hotel industry consultants.
The number of travelers staying in San Francisco’s hotels rose 18% last year, and the trend calls for further growth, according to an internal market analysis by the national accounting firm of Laventhol & Horwath.
This year, for the first time since 1982, the number of tourists traveling to San Francisco will break the 1 million mark, predicts Gary Zodrow, a managing consultant in the firm’s leisure-time industries department.
Tourism began rising in 1985, just as more than 1,700 hotel rooms were added in the city, making hoteliers eager to offer discounts to attract tourists, Zodrow said.
