Penn Ends Washington’s Reign in Crew
Pennsylvania, using a borrowed boat, won the Copley Cup intercollegiate event to end a three-year reign by Washington in the 13th San Diego crew races Saturday.
Pennsylvania was timed in 5 minutes 35.1 seconds for the 2,000-meter course on Mission Bay. California was second in 5:38.66, and the U.S. Naval Academy was third in 5:44.79. The Huskies faded to fourth in 5:46.18.
In the day’s other major races, the Dirty Dozen Rowing Club of Oakland won the Borthwick Trophy for open eight crews, beating the Vancouver Rowing Club from Canada and the British national team, and the Wisconsin women prevailed over Washington and Stanford to win the Whittier Cup.
Orange Coast College finished third behind Washington and Cornell in the JV Eights. The Pirates won the novice division by five lengths over California, and finished second amid controversy in the freshman division. Orange Coast won the race, beating Cal by a half second, but lost a special re-row that was the result of a Cal protest. The Bears claimed a Stanford boat had gone into its lane and clashed oars. Hours after the first race, regatta officials ordered a rematch between Cal and Orange Coast for the title, which Cal won by a second.
