Sen. Hawkins to Have Surgery

DURHAM, N.C. —
Sen. Paula Hawkins (R-Fla.) will undergo back surgery that will sideline her for at least a month in her reelection campaign against Democratic Florida Gov. Bob Graham, an aide said today.
Hawkins will undergo the operation Tuesday at Duke University Medical Center, the aide said. Hawkins, 59, has said she has suffered headaches, neck and back pain since a television studio backdrop fell on her in 1982. A Florida poll released Sunday showed Graham with a 25% lead over Hawkins.
