Los Angeles County has 60 days to correct health and safety violations in two of its county juvenile detention facilities or risk having them declared unfit, according to a letter from the California Youth Authority. The state agency does not have the authority to shut down Central Juvenile Hall in Lincoln Heights and Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey, said Barry J. Nidorf, the county’s chief probation officer. “What it means is (the county) has increased liability” if it fails to remedy the problems, Nidorf said. The state letter followed a federal investigation that called the central detention center one of the worst in the country. Supervisor Kenneth Hahn defended the facility. “We’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. We have dedicated employees there,” Hahn said. Meanwhile, the supervisors approved $100,000 for closed-circuit television to aid in monitoring youth at Central Juvenile Hall.
