Supporters of Greg Jackson, Socialist Workers candidate for lieutenant governor, asked for a Los Angeles police investigation of a fire that destroyed Jackson’s automobile while it was parked in front of his house in the Wilshire District early Monday. Pam Burchett, a spokeswoman for Jackson, said the event followed a series of incidents that included verbal threats from members of rightist groups during a Westwood rally against U.S. funding of the contras in their effort to overthrow Nicaragua’s Sandinista government. Burchett said police did not investigate because firefighters said the car fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. “If it had been the car of a major candidate like (Mayor Tom) Bradley,” she said, “there would be an investigation.” Wilshire District police said they were not aware of the incident.
