DRESSED TO THRILL

Share

Band: The Cherry Bombz.

Personnel: Anita Chellamah, vocals; Andy McCoy, guitar; Nasty Suicide, guitar; Dave Tregunna, bass; Terry Chimes, drums.

History: Andy McCoy was the guitarist for Finland’s trashy rock ‘n’ glam band Hanoi Rocks. When Hanoi’s drummer Razzle died in a car accident involving Motley Crue’s Vince Neil, the band tried to continue with former Clash drummer Terry Chimes, but dissolved at the end of ’84. McCoy and Chellamah, an actress and former member of the female vocal group Toto Coelo (“I Eat Cannibals”), met on an airline flight and decided to form a new group, along with Chimes and Hanoi Rocks rhythm guitarist Nasty. Tregunna, formerly of English punk heroes Sham 69 and an acquaintance of Chimes (they played in an early version of Lords of the New Church), was persuaded to leave the Lords and join the Bombz, who debuted in Helsinki last May. In addition to the Bombz’ new EP “Hot Girls in Love,” McCoy and Suicide recently recorded an acoustic album under the name “Suicide Twins.” Both records will be released in America this month by Jem/PVC.

Sound: The Cherry Bombz are a part of the current ‘70s-flavored glam-rock revival, playing music that suggests wild, drunken nights, wanton sexuality and youthful rebellion--in other words, pure rock ‘n’ roll outrage, dressed to thrill. Belying her past in a lame camp-pop combo, Chellamah displays pure, hard-rockin’ power, throwing a funky dash of soulful feline growling into the Bombz’s heated glitter-smash tunes like “100 Degrees in the Shade.” It’s hardly the most intellectual of combos, but the Cherry Bombz’s maximum energy explosion is filled with mind-numbing fun.
