A man who fired a semi-automatic rifle in an argument with another man and two women in Bell Gardens was killed by police early Friday after he climbed to a rooftop and appeared ready to shoot at officers, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

He was identified by the coroner’s office as Kenneth Mayfield, 22, of South Gate.

Bell Gardens police were called to the 6600 block of Ira Street about 3:30 a.m. and soon asked for help from the Bell-Cudahy Police Department. Mayfield reportedly refused orders to surrender and went to the roof.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Irene McReynolds said officers took cover behind their cars and that they fired when the suspect suddenly rose up as though to shoot at one officer who was moving from one position to another.

The argument reportedly was over one of the women.
