An infant boy abandoned by his mother outside a Tustin apartment complex was home this weekend, in the custody of his grandmother.

The mother, 18-year-old Lajuna Shanetta Hayes, pleaded guilty to felony child abandonment last Wednesday, admitting that she placed her 2-day-old son in a paper bag outside the Walnut East apartment where she was staying with her cousin, Jacqueline Washington.

Hayes, who left her home in Florida last year when she discovered that she was pregnant, said she gave birth in the Tustin apartment bathroom. She kept the secret from her cousin and left the infant where she thought her cousin would find it and take it.

Washington found the child, but instead of keeping it, she called Tustin police. Hayes, who was released from Orange County Jail, is scheduled to be sentenced May 16.

A Juvenile Court referee ruled Friday that the baby, who had been at Childrens Hospital of Orange County, should be placed in the temporary custody of its maternal grandmother, Faith Hayes, who flew here last week. Hayes said that all three generations would stay at the Tustin apartment until the court ruled on permanent custody on May 5.
