Waltrip Is a Winner in Darlington Race
Darrell Waltrip took the lead on Lap 107 and was never seriously challenged again as he went on to win by 6.41 seconds Saturday in the Dixie Cup 200 Grand National race at Darlington International Raceway in Darlington, S.C.
Waltrip, who took the lead from Dale Earnhardt, averaged 123.423 m.p.h. in his Chevrolet and earned $11,570 for the 200-mile, 147-lap event.
Waltrip, who put on new tires during the last two caution periods, said his pit crew was the difference in the race.
“I’ve got the best pit crew in racing and they should get just as much credit for the win as I do,” Waltrip said. “We had a clean run, and I think the new tires were the difference in the victory for me today.”
Tim Richmond, who was on the pole, led the race for the first 24 laps but had to drop out after his Pontiac nicked the wall in the first turn on Lap 26.
