Newport Beach : Balboa Fun Zone to Celebrate Reopening
- Share via
The Balboa Fun Zone, a popular and historic amusement area which had gone downhill in recent years, will reopen this week with a new and refurbished face.
A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, with free rides offered on a 41-foot-high Ferris wheel and a renovated 1950s merry-go-round. Since it opened in 1936, the Fun Zone has attracted thousands of residents and tourists, particularly during the summer months. But in the 1960s, the bayfront amusement park, with its game arcades, shops and fast-food restaurants, deteriorated.
Developer Bruce Wank and local merchants hope that the rebuilt Fun Zone, which is located on Bay Street between Palm and Main streets, will draw visitors back to the Balboa Peninsula.
Cookie maven Famous Amos and TV personality Wally George are expected to be on hand for the celebration.
