Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) was recovering from hip surgery Monday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he was expected to remain for the next week, a spokesman for the senator said.

Goldwater, 77, underwent surgery Saturday to remove wires that had been used in previous hip replacement operations and which were causing him discomfort, the spokesman said. “Sen. Goldwater is doing very well, and the artificial hips themselves are in excellent condition,” Army Maj. John J. Callaghan, the surgeon who performed the surgery, said in a statement.
