Mercury Savings & Loan Assn. reported record first-quarter earnings. Earnings for the three months ended March 31 totaled $3.3 million, up from $715,000 a year earlier. The Huntington Beach-based firm said lower cost of funds coupled with an increasing spread between cost of funds and yield on invested funds helped boost its profitability.
