The Paramount Adult School has been awarded a state Department of Education grant of $74,240 to hire additional teachers for its English as a second language classes, Principal Edward Quesada said.
More than 60% of the 3,000 adults enrolled in the school are non-English speaking or have limited English skills, Quesada said.
Most of the students are recent immigrants who speak Spanish, Quesada said.
The grant will be used to hire seven more teachers for an 18-month period, he said. The adult school is in the Paramount Unified School District.
The Paramount district was one of 45 districts that applied for the grants. Fifteen districts received grants, which were based on need, Quesada said.
“We need the extra teachers. We have a waiting list of students who want to learn English. . . ,” Quesada said.
