Mississippi and Virginia became the eighth and ninth states to give final approval to measures calling for presidential primaries and caucuses to be held during the same week in March, 1988. A bill approved by Maryland’s Legislature is awaiting approval by Gov. Harry Hughes. The action is designed to give the South more clout in choosing a presidential candidate by conducting conventions and primaries at the same time. Laws for the March primary are already on the books in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri and Tennessee.
