A federal prosecutor denied defense allegations that a paid informant consistently lied to implicate 11 religious leaders in a conspiracy to smuggle Central Americans into the United States. Assistant U.S. Atty. Donald M. Reno Jr., who also was accused of lying to prompt a mistrial, presented his rebuttal to defense closing arguments as the sanctuary movement trial in Tucson moved a step closer to jury deliberations. The jury was expected to be handed the alien-smuggling case by the end of the week.
