Assembly Committee Action: Raw Milk: The Assembly Agriculture Committee rejected a bill (AB 4414) by Assemblyman Lloyd G. Connelly (D-Sacramento) to require a warning label to be displayed on raw milk cartons and products stating that the contents are not pasteurized and can cause illness in humans. There was no motion made to approve the bill.

Farm Aid: The same committee approved another bill (AB 4215) by Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) to provide financially strapped farmers with unspecified state financial aid from a proposed bond issue of an undetermined amount to be placed on the November ballot. A 7-2 vote sent the bill to the Public Investments, Finance and Bonded Indebtedness Committee.

Automobile Insurance: The Assembly Finance and Insurance Committee approved a bill (AB 2610) by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sepulveda) to make drivers 55 years of age and older eligible for reduced automobile insurance rates if they satisfactorily complete a state-approved driver-safety program. A 10-4 vote sent the bill to the Ways and Means Committee.

Senate Committee Action: Pay Equity: The Senate Industrial Relations Committee approved a bill (SB 1957) by Senate President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles ) to set up a commission to examine salary differences between male and female state employees. A 5-3 vote sent the bill to the Appropriations Committee. The governor vetoed a similar bill last year.

Imported Wines: The Senate Agriculture Committee approved a bill (SB 2160) by Sen. Henry J. Mello (D-Watsonville) to require imported wines to meet the same quality control standards as California wines for pesticide residue and additives that could be harmful to health. A 6-0 vote sent the bill to the Appropriations Committee.
