A tulip tree planted by Queen Elizabeth II during her February visit to New Zealand has been cut down by vandals, the Botanic Gardens said.

Officials said the vandalism was discovered Monday morning, on the queen’s 60th birthday.

No one claimed responsibility, but a slogan protesting an 1840 British treaty with the Maori people was sprayed on the grass near the tree.
