Bristol-Myers said its first-quarter profit jumped 17.6% over a year ago on a 10.3% gain in sales. Richard L. Gelb, chairman of the New York company, said that domestic and international sales increased 8% and 17%, respectively, in the quarter. Bristol-Myers makes pharmaceutical and medical products, non-prescription health products, toiletries and beauty aids and household products. Its brand names include Bufferin, Excedrin, Ban, Drano and Clairol.
