SPRING HIGHLIGHTS
Canoga Park 7, Taft 6--Canoga Park had six players suffering from the flu but still withstood a late Taft rally at Lanark Park. Sophomore Mike Kerber (2-0), allowed 11 hits and four walks in 6 innings before giving way to Kasey Fink with the tying and winning runs on base. Fink induced a pop-up to second base to record his first save.
Granada Hills 5, Van Nuys 3--Mark Kessler threw a four-hitter for Granada Hills.
Chatsworth 4, Reseda 2--Pitcher John Haselbosch scattered six hits to lead Chatsworth.
Agoura 6, Nordhoff 2--Mitch Meyers threw a four-hitter as first-place Agoura improved its Frontier League record to 9-0. Meyers struck out nine and walked four.
Bell-Jeff 12, Cathedral 4--Six players had two hits each for Bell-Jeff. Fernando Gauna scored three runs and Petar Vucurevic drove in three. Bell-Jeff starter Mike Dourisbourne picked up his first win of the season. He allowed two hits in five innings.
El Camino 3, Cleveland 1--Jim Biscailez’s one-out single drove in the go-ahead run in a two-run seventh inning.
Schurr 7, Burroughs 5--Chad Atwater and Butch Lenoue had run-scoring singles in Schurr’s four-run first inning.
San Gabriel 3, Hart 2--Pete Leal sparked San Gabriel’s three-run fourth inning with a two-run single. Tim Nedin hurled a six-hitter for Hart. He struck out seven and walked one.
North Hollywood 7, Hollywood 0--Peter Straus and Glen Raasch each had three hits, and Augie Loya had two, to lead North Hollywood. Pitcher Perry Montapert started for North Hollywood, allowing four hits and striking out five in four innings.
Oakwood 15, Southwestern 7-- Adam Mehr homered in the first inning and drove in two runs in the fourth inning to pace Oakwood. Scott Bernstein also drove in two runs in the fourth for Oakwood.
Poly 6, Verdugo Hills 3--Hans Hekking gave up five hits, struck out five and walked six for Poly.
St. Bonaventure 4, Oak Park 2--Darrin Lloyd drove in the game-tying run, forcing extra innings. Oak Park had the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth inning, but all three batters struck out.
Simi Lutheran 11, Highland Hall 6--Bernado Sanchez hit a three-run home run in a game that was ended in the fifth inning when Highland Hall’s catcher was thrown out of the game and there were no substitutes to replace him. Tahoa Kiori had two doubles for Simi Lutheran.
Queen of Angels 8, Chadwick 6--Emilio Gomez and Tim Preimesberger combined to drive in seven runs for Queen of Angels.
Santa Clara 7, Calabasas 2--Andy Ahearn had a two-run triple in the first inning and teammate Greg Ruh was 2 for 3, including a double.
Providence 13, Buckley 1--First baseman Jeff Cirillo drove in four runs with four hits and Tony Ross had three hits and three RBIs. Kevin Miller pitched a complete game for Providence.
Saugus 6, Canyon 5--Starting pit cher Tom Dodson hit the game- tying home run in the sixth inning for Saugus. With no outs and the bases loaded, Jim Bates of Saugus drove in two runs in the seventh inning to win the game.
Sylmar 7, Fairfax 2--Sylmar sophomore Alonzo Woodfin struck out 10 and allowed four hits in seven innings. Biff McGahan of Sylmar hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
La Salle 4, Chaminade 3--Chaminade’s Peter Dunn knocked in a run in the sixth inning to send the game into extra innings. Jay Cruz’s single drove in the game-winning run.
Montclair Prep 8, Village Christian 1--Jay Smith hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and teammate Jeff Light added a two-run homer in the third inning. Tyler Victor added a home run for Village Christian.
High School Softball
Burbank 1, Burroughs 0--Christy Alves had just pitched in her 17th game. She had finished with a three-hitter, had struck out four and had allowed just one run.
But the burden Alves bore on a long, weary walk back to the dugout finally took its toll. She couldn’t hide her disappointment after Burbank, ranked 12th in the Southern Section coaches poll, defeated seventh-ranked Burroughs.
“She can’t think it’s her fault,” Burroughs Coach Jerry Libman said. “She played a great game. But, she’s kind of sensitive to that.”
Alves (14-2) moped off the field after she walked Kristie Helsley to force in the winning run in the bottom of a seventh inning. She had given up two singles and two walks in the inning.
Burbank’s Debbie Day (13-1), who scored the winning run, recorded her 12th shutout with a three-hitter and struck out nine. She entered the game with an 0.15 ERA.
The win moved Burbank (5-0, 16-2 overall) into first place in the Foothill League. Burroughs is 4-1, 15-2 overall.
Burroughs had loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning, but Day struck out Barbara Hofer and Jacqie DeLange grounded out.
