Carson : Annexation Pact Reached
The City Council approved an arrangement with Los Angeles County that will allow the county to keep the $9 million in tax revenue it gets from the Rancho Dominguez area if Carson annexes it.
The action paves the way for a joint hearing with Compton before the Local Agency Formation Commission, which will decide which city can annex the area, according to Patricia Nemeth, Carson’s community development director. The hearing is tentatively set for June 25.
The 788 acres that Carson seeks to annex is a largely industrial area, bounded roughly by Wilmington Avenue, Del Amo Boulevard, Alameda Street and the Compton city limit. It includes 2,000 residents, most of them mobile-home dwellers who have lobbied for annexation by Carson because of the city’s strict mobile-home rent control ordinance and the prospect of a more responsive local government.
The site also includes the Dominguez Ranch Adobe and Seminary, a historical site.
In its negotiations with the county, Carson had sought to exclude any additional revenue generated by possible redevelopment projects in the area. The city gave in when the county’s disagreement with that plan threatened to jeopardize the annexation.
