U.S. Crime Up 4% Last Year
Reported crime in the United States increased 4% in 1985, led by an 8% increase in the South, after three consecutive years of decreases, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report showed today.
Figures collected for the survey also showed that crime increased in all categories and in all regions of the nation except the Midwest. New York City recorded almost as many murders as Detroit and Los Angeles combined, although the number--1,384--was lower than in 1984.
Crime increased 5% in the West and 2% in the Northeast. There was no change in the Midwest, the report said.
By categories, motor vehicle theft and aggravated assault increased 6%, larceny theft and violent crime 5%, property crime and forcible rape 4%, robbery and arson 3%, burglary 2% and murder 1%.
Crime had decreased 3% from 1981 to 1982, 7% from 1982 to 1983 and 2% from 1983 to 1984, the FBI said.
